A shocking incident has emerged from Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, where a Dalit student was brutally attacked by a group of unidentified men while on his way to an exam. The attackers severed the fingers of the 11th-grade student, Devendran.
Devendran, the son of daily wage laborer Thang Ganesh, was traveling from his home to his school in Palayamkottai for an exam when he was ambushed. Reports state that three individuals stopped the bus, forcibly pulled him out, and severed the fingers of his left hand. The assailants also attacked his father, leaving him with severe injuries, including wounds on his head and other parts of his body.
According to the victim’s family, the attack was linked to a recent kabaddi match. Devendran’s team had defeated the opposing team, and since he played a crucial role in securing the victory, the attack was allegedly an act of revenge.
As other passengers intervened, the attackers fled the scene.
Devendran was rushed to Srivaikundam Government Hospital and later transferred to Tirunelveli Government Hospital, where doctors are attempting to reattach his severed fingers through surgery.
Following the attack, police have arrested three minors in connection with the case.
Thang Ganesh, who works in a brick kiln, has alleged that this was a caste-based crime.
“Three people from the neighboring village, belonging to the Thevar community, attacked us. This is a caste-based crime. We belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community,” Thang Ganesh stated.
